This is the page where you find out Information About your Mac that is well worth knowing.......

The more 3rd party software you load in your machine, the greater the chance of software conflicts, either during startup...memory leaks while in use...or crashes and freezes while in use, either because you just have to have that shareware or software program/utility...written largely by HOBBYISTS, (even if they are well paid programmers :-p) not professional Apple programmers.

Beware any software that is pre-release, or beta software. Wait for the release versions of that software, unless you absolutely MUST have the program and can do with nothing else-or you know the software is useful and bug-free. Also as Apple upgrades it's Operating Systems pretty regularly, a program or utility may not function correctly under the new version of the Mac OS. Be very wary and careful when upgrading system software. Always perform a clean install of major system upgrades and carefully load your old extensions and control strips and control panels, never replacing new versions of specific Apple system components with old.

Quicksilver Tip: How to eject your optical drive without the Apple keyboard

In its wisdom, Apple has done away with the CD eject button on its newest Power Macs. To eject your optical drive, Apple wants you to press the Media Eject Key on the Apple keyboard.
Unfortunately, most third party keyboards don’t ship with a Media Eject Key. Fortunately, Apple included a work around. You’ve got to go on a hunting expedition to find it, though.
The fix is a little application called Eject. It ships with Mac OS 9.2.1. I don’t think it was included with earlier versions of the Mac OS, but you can correct me if I’m wrong. [Eject This Disk has long been an available Speakable Items script.

Double-click Eject, and presto, your optical drive ejects. Double-click again, and your CD tray slides back into your Mac. Eject also comes as a Control Strip Module.
If clicking the Eject application gets a little tiresome, or you don’t want the icon cluttering up your desktop, you don’t have to live with it. You can restore Media Eject Key functionality to your non-Apple keyboard by assigning the Eject application to a function key with the Keyboard control panel.

Ready to go hunt for the Eject app? Look for it in Applications (Mac OS 9) -> Apple Extras -> Eject Extras.

It is also in Mac OS X......To find the installer, go to the root of your hard drive and open System: Library: CoreServices: Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu.

MAC GURU Words of Wisdom

Be VERY Careful of whom you do business with. I sell Macs here in Lynchburg. I and others have had some bad experiences with "Mac" businesses that have done lousy things. For instance......

macsofalltrades.com once sold to me (2002) a blue and white G3 tower that had a butchered motherboard with a compromised cpu mounting.....the zif socket was considerably altered so that I had to replace the motherboard, oh and the case latch was broken too, as well as the case hinges bent-and I had to replace the case latch as well. There were "warranty void if removed" stickers all over the hinged portions of the computer case so macsofalltrades OBVIOUSLY knew they were selling crap-fraud. Avoid Macs of all trades thus as that company is rotten.

Also MacConnection.com sold some lousy non-functional hynix memory to a client of mine (August 2006) who insisted on doing business with them rather than with me. Not only did they sell non-functional memory but they would not take it back insisting that it was Apple memory. That is a lie, and they purpetrated a fraud (knowing that is a lie) and do not do business with MacConnection.

In short if you want to do business with someone do business with someone you know or you will get problems. In Lynchburg Virginia and environs you do business with me. I am honest and decent not the filth that trys to get away with fraud done to others.

If you want to do anything on the internet, watch streaming video, download software, then you need a broadband connection via cable modem or dsl.

A 56k modem just dosen't get it done anywhere near as well. Pay the extra money, it's worth it. At least for a DSL if not Cable Modem.

To protect against power surges from lightning or other type of power surge such as faulty downstream power transformers, PLEASE invest in a good surge protector that also protects the modem as well. Go the extra few dollars to buy one that offers at least 1000 joules of protection. APS makes the best surge strips out there. I also recommend the Belkin Surgemaster 2 line. Best prices can be had from Home Depot for surge protector strips. Also you can piggyback surge strips in case you already have a console type suppressor with those on/off switches you can't live without AND you want even further protection. The kinds of damage you could have done to your computer can be very very fatal without power surge protection. Many Apple hardware problems are directly related to surge damage-the silent killer! Also another reason for AppleCare!

Buy Norton SystemWorks for OS 9 OR Alsoft Diskwarrior for OS X to do troubleshooting on your software. I use them on my on-site calls and highly recommend it.

GET antivirus software and keep your firewall turned ON. Sooner or later you'll get hit with an email virus, or get "hacked" by some jerk (who can do all kinds of damage-even steal your identity). And keep your virus preferences updated monthly or your antivirus software is useless!! With some foresight you'll be safe. Consider it just a "lock on your door". Even if there are no viruses on yopur version of Mac OS there could be in future.

Firewall software is important as well if you have a broadband connection! Keeps hackers out of your machine while your machine is turned on (as you are ALWAYS connected to the net when your computer is on if you have dsl or a cable modem)!

Don't write in email anything you wouldn't have printed on the front page of the New York Times. Email essentially is the electronic version of a postcard...NOT a secure letter in an envelope.

Apple Retail Sales in Virginia

I am an Apple Authorized Business Agent under Contract with Apple Computer to sell Macintosh computers. Call me at 434-509-4137 to purchase new Apple products!!!

Currently there are Apple retail stores in the Washington DC area at Tyson's Corner and Arlington (Clarendon) Virginia with an additional store at Richmond, Virginia. All of these stores are excellent places to shop for Apple computers, software and accessories.

Some of the CompUSA stores now have full time Apple Employees or Apple Solutions Consultants, or ASCs. They are paid by Apple Computer, NOT CompUSA. What you need to know is that you now can go to CompUSA, have an ASC guide you through your sale, and allow you to buy AppleCare and what other compatable peripherals you need, AND be there to answer your user questions down the road should you wish that too! They (and AppleCare) are your best solution for long-term service for your new Mac. If you don't find an ASC on duty when you go Mac shopping, just come back when they are on duty. I for one am a former Marketsource Apple Power Rep (and Demo Day Rep) as well as a former CompUSA Apple Power Rep sales employee.

I know from years of hard retail experience that everyone and I mean EVERYone needs AppleCare if for nothing else than the telephone technical support. What I do is provide what AppleCare does not, which is to support existing 3rd party software or planned software and hardware configurations onsite. (I will also support Apple software onsite) I offer hardware upgrades on out of warranty Macs for complete Mac care. Check the AppleCare link on my main page for more information on the very excellent AppleCare program for your Mac.

ONE LAST WORD

There is NO substitute for on-site tech support. If something does not work for you, or you are unaware as to how to do something with your Mac, well just call me for an onsite visit.
